Myology Course

Myology course

Course Overview

As part of our mission to promote collaborations and learning across overlapping areas of muscle research, Muscle Center faculty participate in teaching the annual Myology Course for students, postdocs and clinical fellows.  This Course was started by Center faculty member Kevin Flanigan, MD and is now also Co-Directed by Megan Waldrop, MD and Jill Rafael-Fortney, Ph.D. This course was the first in the US of its kind, featuring a mix of basic and clinical science lectures followed by specific training in either laboratory or clinical tracks.

The goal of these week-long immersive training sessions is to help trainees go beyond a basic understanding of muscle disease by gaining insights and experience from experts in the field. The faculty provide an up-to-date survey of neuromuscular diseases and address clinical syndromes, mechanisms of pathogenesis, molecular therapeutics, and topics in career development. In laboratory sessions, PhD trainees will cross-train in new techniques to improve their skill sets. We ultimately strive to help prepare the next generation of clinicians and translational researchers for successful research careers.

Lab track offerings include:

  • Muscle Metabolism Using Metabolic Cages
  • Isolation of Primary Myoblasts from Mice
  • Introduction to Flow Cytometry to Study Muscle Progenitor Cells
  • In utero Gene Transfer
  • Muscle Histopathology
  • Mitochondrial Metabolism Measured by Seahorse
  • Common Microscopy Approaches to Imaging Muscle
  • Reprogramming of Human Fibroblasts for Muscle Research
  • AAV Production
  • Quantitative Immunofluorescence Analysis in Muscle
  • In Vivo Mouse Electrophysiology and Physiology Lab
  • Gene Delivery Techniques and Tissue Harvesting
